Let’s Move! Cities and Towns
The Let’s Move! Campaign started by First Lady Michelle Obama, has an ambitious national goal of solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation so that children born today will reach adulthood at a healthy weight. On Friday, June 11, 2010 Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius launched the Let’s Move Cities and Towns component of the Let’s Move! Campaign, formed to encouraged local officials to adopt a long-term, sustainable and holistic approach to fight child obesity in their communities. The National Conference of Black Mayors has partnered with this campaign and is tracking, and communicating commitments to healthier lifestyles and articulating them to partner organizations and our mayors - commitments that align with the Let’s Move Campaign priorities. With 658 African American Mayors representing over 48 million people nationwide, being committed to this campaign has the potential to substantially fill a unique niche among childhood obesity initiatives across the United States.
